About Us

A Century on the Coast

A Timeless Coastal Legacy

Mombasa Golf Club was born on 27 June 1911, when a meeting chaired by Mr. S.L. Hinde and attended by eighteen gentlemen unanimously resolved that a Golf Club be formed in Mombasa. A sub-committee — Messrs. Kidd, Croall and Barry — was appointed to approach the Government for a grant of land.

At the next full committee meeting, held on 20 July 1911, the sub-committee reported that the Government had granted the use of land near the lighthouse at a rental of Rupees 15 per annum. The entrance fee was set at Rs. 10 until 1 January 1912, after which a subscription of Rs. 3 per month was charged. Robert Kidd was appointed the Club’s first Captain.

Clearance of the bush and scrub was carried out energetically through 1911, with many early members clearing land themselves after office hours and at weekends, and the nine-hole course was completed in 1912.

The clubhouse, first erected in 1920, has been maintained and improved over the years through generous donations from members, firms and companies, alongside the club’s own investment in its roof, floor and facilities.

Members are drawn from shipping, tea, legal, banking and import/export organisations, government officers and other stakeholders who enjoy both the golf and the social life that comes with it. Mombasa Golf Club is the only links course in the region — the only one south of the Sahara and north of the Limpopo — and in 1997 was gazetted a site of historic value by the National Museums of Kenya.
